The weekend of night adventures is over.
Friday, qualification. Hasty and too fast beginning lead to loads of mistakes, in the end I luckily got to senses and drove home with little better feeling. No A final though.
Saturday, B final. Two “compulsory” mistakes on the first 2 controls (all together almost 9 min). I was about to turn home, but it would have been useless since the 2nd c. was furthest from the goal
I slowed down and started to READ the map. It worked out!
I made it home, alone, without a single miss (in my night-O-skills-scale). Unbelievable! I kind of even liked it, when I think about it now. Perhaps, I may even run some more night viikkorastit this year until snow comes.
PS: Of course I’m not a night wizard, which I guess I’ll never be. Anyway, I’m still wondering what is so cool about running in a dark towards somewhere just watching a compass, sometimes catching some feature and eventually getting a reflex. No doubt, skills are required to be an excellent night-hawk.
But from my point of view the night-O seems to often be the case of being lucky, as it is not in the day-O. Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not. For example last year’s silver medalist Jarkko Liuha didn’t make it to A this year or Mikko Sipilä commented his Q race:”I could not believe I made it to A, for example, towards the 6th c. I had really no idea where I was all the way. Then lake, Yes! I could write more…
PS1: Don’t get me wrong, I do admire all you night geniuses!
